Program Name: Volunteer Work Abroad in Cook Islands – Cook Islands Projects
Program Type: Social Work Abroad
Volunteer will be involved in the following projects:
- Reading Program: Students in the Cook Islands have no problem speaking and understanding English, but due to the influence of local Maori tradition, their phonetics and reading struggles. This is why we need international volunteers like you to help them develop needed skills.
- Museum and Library: Libraries and Museums in the Cook Islands need help of volunteers like you to help them stack books, clean, straighten shelves, preserve and file archives.
- Takitumu Conservation Project: Conservation volunteers are needed abroad to help protect the plants, preserve nature, and protect one of the rarest birds in the world – the Kakerori (also known as Rarotonga Flyer). Conservation volunteers will also work with the local staff to help repair trails, move and remove fallen trees, as well as work on light construction.
- Senior Care Center: Volunteers are need to closely work with senior citizens (mamas and papas) and assist them with daily activities such as songs, communicating and spend quality time with them, create fun activities or play cards with them, and assist during special events.
- Whale Center: Nan Hauser, world famous scientist, created a whale center in the Cook Islands. This center is open to general public and students visit it for research and studies of marine life. International volunteers help teaching children, rebuilding exhibits, and arranging school visits. Sometimes volunteers help with research projects.
- Health Care and Special Needs: International Volunteers with prior experience in counseling, special needs, psychiatry, psychology, teaching, art, or physical therapy will work at Handicapped Center working with adults who are physically or mentally challenged.
