  • And others…

Description: In Argentina, the Children Assistance Volunteer abroad program has been one of the most popular programs. Since their economic downfall in the end of the 20th century, non-profit organizations were formed to assist children whose parents could not supply basic necessities, like clothing and food, healthcare and schooling. Because of international volunteers, many of the community’s children and adolescents enjoy after-school activities as well as meals. These volunteer programs have become incredibly popular, and this popularity has lead to their success; because there is such a great interest in volunteering abroad, many things can be accomplished for those that need help.

Volunteer abroad participants can look forward to organizing activities for the local youth. Some of these include sports and games, arts and crafts, music, and providing academic support, such as helping students comprehend school assignments. If you have received TEFL training or similar training, you may be asked to teach English to children ranging in age from six to 16.

Basic Requirements: Argentina is a developing country where almost 40% of citizens cannot cover their basic needs, but may appear more advanced than other developing nations due to a high percentage of middle class citizens.  Volunteers in Argentina should realize this glossy exterior does not mean there is nothing to do.  The level of organization among voluntary assistance projects in Argentina is lacking, so there are opportunities for volunteers to take initiative and follow through with individual contributions as well.

All participants of volunteer abroad programs must be 18 years of age, be willing to volunteer 20-25 hours per week, and have an intermediate knowledge of Spanish.  Applicants without such knowledge can only volunteer in disadvantaged children projects and will be required to take at least 2 weeks of Spanish classes before volunteering abroad.
Keep in mind that the acclimatization process for volunteers with intermediate Spanish generally takes 1-2 weeks and the induction to the project takes 2-3 weeks.  Beginners in Spanish can expect the time for these processes to double.  Therefore, the preferred minimum commitment of each volunteer is 15 days, and volunteers committing less than 2-3 weeks shouldn’t expect to accomplish much during their volunteer programs due to lack of time.

The success of your volunteer abroad program is completely dependent upon you and what you want out of it.  A proactive attitude and a willingness to help are essential to making your volunteer abroad program in Argentina a great success.
