volunteer work abroad in tanzania

Program Name: Volunteer Work Abroad - Women Project in Tanzania

Organization: Maasai International Challenge Africa (MICATZ)

About MICATZ: MICA is a non-profit organization which is located in Arusha, Tanzania and managed by volunteers from all over the world. MICA  specializes in providing volunteer work programs in developing countries in Africa and Asia!  MICA organizes international programs for students, groups, individuals, and virtually anyone interested in going abroad and making a difference.

MICA offers a wide range of affordable and unique projects such as teaching English abroad, working at orphanages, healthcare and medical internships overseas, community development projects, women assistance programs, as well as conservation volunteer work abroad programs.

Highlights: The Maasai people of northern Tanzania have a rich cultural history, and many of them still live their lives according to traditional methods. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but Maasai culture is very patriarchal, meaning that the women have very little power.  If you choose to volunteer with a group of Maasai women, you will work with them to generate their own income and to empower them through trade and business.  The project strives to train Maasai women to create various handicrafts and other goods that can later be sold at the market.  Some of the proceeds will be given directly to the women, providing them with their own source of income and lending them more control over their lives.

In addition, volunteers may also teach some English to the Maasai women, giving them the skills they need to interact with and sell their goods to tourists. English classes may be taught to children as well, who could then engage in trade activities and help generate additional income.

Empowering women can be as simple as teaching them how to create marketable goods and sell them. With their own renewable stream of income, you can help the Maasai women in Tanzania better take care of themselves and improve their lives.
