Organization: Kiboko Wilderness Adventures.
Description: Kiboko Wilderness Adventures offers this program to its participants alongside other programs.
Short Term Volunteer: This can range from 3 days to 21 days. After initial application of the participants we request more information. The process of selecting of host family begins and this is through the input of highly experienced Kiboko Wilderness Adventures Staff who visits the host family and also the community project that the individual or the group of volunteer will be working on.
Long Term Volunteer: This usually follows the same format as the short term only that is an extended one. We start with one week in depth Kiswahili and Culture immersion program in Nairobi Kenya. After this the participants heads to the village where they can teach English, Sports. Help in community project among other things. An individual may opt to stay in Home stay or a nearby guest house. We usually discuss this in case to case basis. Then there is final travel sightseeing the country.
Home Stay: In Kenya we have two types of Home Stay; Urban and Rural. Students will be placed in individual home stays where they will begin to explore issues of tradition vs. modernity, change and continuity in socioeconomic practices, and community vs. state in a capitalist state. Here they immerse themselves in the daily life and ritual of their host community and work with locals on projects chosen by community leaders. They stay in homesteads in the rural village in Kenya where they will eat local foods, sleep in a local rural homestead, herd cattle ,use oxen plough, ride bicycles to the market, attend market days and other village chores. Through hard work, they begin to understand and appreciate the problems and joys of living in a developing country.
Those seeking overseas voluntary work and volunteer opportunities abroad will discover the difference one individual can make. Whether you find yourself teaching English in a school in Africa, building a community center, or tending to village daily chores in Kenya, one thing is certain: this overseas voluntary work experience will change your life. The home we choose most of the time are in rural Kenya away from the hustle and Bustle of cities like Nairobi although in some circumstances we have hosted some volunteer in Nairobi, Nakuru and other major cities.
In the rural area home stay we choose the family for their warmth and friendliness though their homes may not have plumbed water or electricity. We make sure that there is at least one English speaking member of the family. The houses are usually constructed with timber or cement block but this is in a simple way. Usually they use charcoal or firewood to cook. Other family will use gas or kerosene. About the food we supplement the food of the family every week through the program fee. Usually we may buy sugar, kerosene, cooking fat etc. In addition to what the family have they are able to get a decent meal and they all eat together. If far from home lunch is usually provided at the project site.
Volunteer Project: During the home stay in collaboration with the participant(s) we identify a project of their choice. This includes school construction, teaching English, helping in a nearby orphanage center, teaching community about HIV/AIDS, re afforestation program among others. These projects are taken within the community that is hosting the participants. Currently we have a classroom construction underway at Kambi Primary School. The participants are welcome to raise funds towards the project of their choice. For more info about this project please visit.
Final Travel: After your volunteer period is over we usually offer an optional trip to get to know the beautiful country of Kenya. This depends on how many days an individual want to spend. We usually offer a very competitive rate on this. Some options are safari to Mara, Samburu, and Lake Nakuru among others. Please for more information on this check.
