Volunteer Abroad in Argentina - Community Development with Fundacion AFOS

Country: Argentina

Program type: Community Development

Program Name: Community Development - Volunteer Abroad in Argentina with Fundacion AFOS

Overview: Volunteers Abroad are needed to help the citizens of Córdoba. Fundacion AFOS, in conjunction with its partners in Argentina, have created volunteer abroad programs in hopes to develop surrounding communities, teach abraod disadvantaged children, and establish faith for the future of the Córdoba citizens. If you are searching for an opportunity to make a difference, Fundacion AFOS can assist you in finding the right volunteer abroad program for you.

Córdoba is located near the middle of Argentina, tucked in the foothills of Sierras Chicas. Here, volunteers abroad will find a city full of cultural events and entertainment: these include touring historical monuments, festivals, and football matches in Córdoba Stadium.

Several volunteer abroad programs are available through Fundacion AFOS; however, if you do not find one in your desired field, you can always ask about areas. We want to match you with the program that best utilizes your skills. Some volunteering abroad programs include: offering professional support to non-profit organizations, aiding the disabled, assisting underprivileged children, and organizing community expansion.

Description: The Volunteer Abroad Program for Community Development has a very specific purpose: the project focuses on eliminating social and economic barriers for particular social groups. This is done through better education as well as creating more opportunities in the social, cultural, and employment fields. International volunteers, with the aid of Córdoba citizens, can initiate a plan to enhance the standard of living for the city’s people.

Volunteers abroad will find that there are many different ways to help the communities in Córdoba. You can teach English and computer skills to local students, plan art and trades workshops, offer your help at the local cinema, or organize community events. Other options include lending a hand with magazine and radio ventures. Through these projects, Córdoba community members can learn important skills from international volunteers so they can provide from themselves and their families after the volunteers have gone.

Basic Requirements: Argentina is a developing country where almost 40% of citizens cannot cover their basic needs, but may appear more advanced than other developing nations due to a high percentage of middle class citizens.  Volunteers abroad in Argentina should realize this glossy exterior does not mean there is nothing to do.  The level of organization among voluntary assistance projects in Argentina is lacking, so there are opportunities for volunteers to take initiative and follow through with individual contributions as well.

All participants of volunteer abroad programs must be 18 years of age, be willing to volunteer 20-25 hours per week, and have an intermediate knowledge of Spanish.  Applicants without such knowledge can only volunteer in disadvantaged children projects and will be required to take at least 2 weeks of Spanish classes before volunteering abroad.

Keep in mind that the acclimatization process for volunteers with intermediate Spanish generally takes 1-2 weeks and the induction to the project takes 2-3 weeks.  Beginners in Spanish can expect the time for these processes to double.  Therefore, the preferred minimum commitment of each volunteer is 15 days, and volunteers committing less than 2-3 weeks shouldn’t expect to accomplish much during their volunteer programs due to lack of time.

The success of your volunteer abroad program is completely dependent upon you and what you want out of it.  A proactive attitude and a willingness to help are essential to making your volunteer abroad program in Argentina a great success.
