Program Name: Volunteer Abroad - Community Outreach in Uganda with MICATZ
Organization: Maasai International Challenge Africa (MICATZ)
About MICATZ: MICA is a non-profit organization which is located in Arusha, Tanzania and managed by volunteers from all over the world. MICA specializes in providing volunteer abroad programs in developing countries in Africa and Asia! MICA organizes international programs for students, groups, individuals, and virtually anyone interested in going abroad and making a difference.
MICA offers a wide range of affordable and unique projects such as teaching English abroad, working at orphanages, healthcare and medical internships overseas, community development projects, women assistance programs, as well as conservation volunteer programs.
Highlights: Teaching placements are available in a variety of villages and aim to provide children with an open, supportive environment where they can be creative and flourish mentally and physically. Volunteers are responsible for organizing events and activities for the children, which can include arts and crafts, music and singing, and structured playtime. Volunteers can also lead sports sessions, teach about health topics, and focus on academics. Anything that lets the children play, relax, learn, and have fun is a good option.
Community outreach programs can encompass a lot of different tasks and topics. Volunteers in this area can opt to mentor youth or promote adult education. Some placements involve promoting vocational skills for women, HIV prevention and AIDS care, public health, and providing instruction in organic farming techniques. If you have a medical background, you can opt to work with a health-based organization. Whatever kind of community project you choose, your ideas and enthusiasm can contribute greatly to the grassroots development of a community. In addition, you and the community members will be able to experience a profound cultural exchange and cultivate a new understanding of one another.
Several child care projects are also available. Volunteers assist children with tasks such as feeding and basic care, and also organize activities and playtime. Another primary goal of the volunteers is to provide HIV/AIDS education appropriate for children ranging in age from 3 to 12. Volunteers can also assist with administrative tasks at the child care center, including updating paperwork, budgeting, maintaining children's files, and creating proposals. As a note, we want you to be aware that there will be a significant language barrier between you and the children. Local teachers will be able to assist with translation.
These are challenging volunteer abroad programs that are great for people who have prior experience with children and organizing activities for children. For instance, if are or ever were a daycare worker or camp counselor, this may be the project for you! You may be an ideal candidate even if you don't have experience, but you love children. Bring your songs, games, and especially your enthusiasm to the village!
