Program Name: Volunteer Abroad - AIDS Assistance in Tanzania with MICATZ
Organization: Maasai International Challenge Africa (MICATZ)
About MICATZ: MICA is a non-profit organization which is located in Arusha, Tanzania and managed by volunteers from all over the world. MICA specializes in providing volunteer abroad programs in developing countries in Africa and Asia! MICA organizes international programs for students, groups, individuals, and virtually anyone interested in going abroad and making a difference.
MICA offers a wide range of affordable and unique projects such as teaching English abroad, working at orphanages, healthcare and medical internships overseas, community development projects, women assistance programs, as well as conservation volunteer programs.
Highlights: HIV/AIDS has been a problem in Tanzania for decades, and is now classified as a mature epidemic. A significant portion of the population has been infected; the disease continues to spread due to many factors, including lack of health infrastructure, limited resources, and lack of awareness and education. HIV/AIDS has created thousands of orphans, and helps to propagate the extreme poverty and social issues that the nation already faces.
As a volunteer abroad working to fight HIV/AIDS and its impact on society, your tasks will consist primarily of caring for people with HIV/AIDS and educating the local community about the disease. You will be placed in a clinic and will have the opportunity to work directly with patients. Those with HIV/AIDS face much stigma and, in a country of limited resources, struggle to receive the care they need. You will be able to work with the patients and improve their quality of life by providing counseling, and well as compassion and understanding. You may also assist with basic care, finding employment, or other various needs, based on the specific group of patients. And lastly, you will work to educate the community about the disease through various seminars, striving both to mitigate the spread and to lessen the stigma associated with it.
Working with HIV/AIDS patients and the Tanzanian community, you can help improve countless lives and the future of a people. All it takes is some motivation and a desire to make a difference.
