Program Name: Teaching English in India
Highlights: Programs abroad offer volunteer programs to teach English to students in India. Placements are available in primary and secondary schools, and volunteers can act as teacher or teaching assistant. Activities will include lessons, games, and various exercises to enhance the students' spoken English skills and boost their confidence. Volunteers are also given the option to take charge of after-school clubs and activities such as sports, games, art, and music. Volunteers take part in a variety of projects to help strengthen the local community as well.
This volunteer abroad program takes place all year and the duration of your stay can last anywhere from 2 to 12 weeks based on your preference. Volunteers are typically paired up and placed with host families within the community.
Most volunteers within this teaching abroad program have worked as teaching assistants in a non-formal education center for children of ages 5-12. These centers take in underprivileged children from the community with the objective of supporting them and preparing them to attend government-run primary schools. Volunteers usually teach in pairs in and can be placed in a small or large centers, which may host up to 70 students. Volunteers will be responsible for teaching English, but may also teach other subjects such as math. The volunteer teaching assistants will use a variety of teaching tools and techniques, and can employ songs, games, rhymes, and other fun activities to engage the students and aid in the learning process.
Requirements and Qualifications: We are looking for motivated, enthusiastic individuals fluent in English who enjoy working with children to volunteer abroad. We have different projects to suit volunteers with different skills and experience levels, so even those just starting out will be able to contribute positively a project. Experience with teaching or working with children is helpful, but not a requirement. In the event that we feel that you need more experience in order to participate in certain projects, we may ask you to take a TEFL or TESOL course before your departure.
