Program Name: Teach English in Peru
Organization: Maasai International Challenge Africa (MICATZ)
About MICATZ: MICA is a non-profit organization which is located in Arusha, Tanzania and managed by volunteers from all over the world. MICA specializes in providing volunteer abroad programs in developing countries in Africa and Asia! MICA organizes international programs for students, groups, individuals, and virtually anyone interested in going abroad and making a difference.
MICA offers a wide range of affordable and unique projects such as teaching English abroad, working at orphanages, healthcare and medical internships overseas, community development projects, women assistance programs, as well as conservation volunteer programs.
Highlights: Participants in this volunteer abroad program will be teaching English to Peruvian students who attend English schools. The schools require the assistance of fluent English-speaking volunteers regularly. For this program, volunteers are given the option of teaching three hour-long classes daily or acting as teaching assistant to help students work on their pronunciation skills. Students range in age from thirteen to forty-five; students with varying levels of English proficiency are mingled together in the school.
There is a fixed curriculum that is provided to volunteers at the beginning of their project. Volunteers will receive support as well as teaching materials from a local teaching coordinator. As a volunteer, you will be responsible for developing projects to aid in student learning and language acquisition. You can expect to work 5 days a week for 5 to 6 hours at a time.
Another volunteer abroad project available in this area focuses on 60 children who attend a nutrition center. The children are mostly between five and six years old, but there are a few that are much younger as well. The children attend the center daily from 9am to 2-3pm, and are fed a proper, balanced lunch with extra nutrients as needed. The center also aims to provide basic education for the children.
In the words of a former volunteer,
“Working at the Nutrition Centre was a really enjoyable experience although hard work…the
children are so full of energy. We basically had to help them to eat their breakfast and lunch and
in between times look after and play with them…making them laugh and showering them with
love and affection. The Centre does some fantastic work and being able to help them with that
was very fulfilling, exciting and great fun.” Elaine, England
