Program Name: Medical Volunteer Overseas in Tanzania
Organization: Maasai International Challenge Africa (MICATZ)
About MICATZ: MICA is a non-profit organization which is located in Arusha, Tanzania and managed by volunteers from all over the world. MICA specializes in providing volunteer work programs in developing countries in Africa and Asia! MICA organizes international programs for students, groups, individuals, and virtually anyone interested in going abroad and making a difference.
MICA offers a wide range of affordable and unique projects such as teaching English abroad, working at orphanages, healthcare and medical internships overseas, community development projects, women assistance programs, as well as conservation volunteer work abroad programs.
Highlights: The The volunteer project focuses on a small school in a remote village in the Arusha region in Tanzania. Volunteers may be asked to teach or assist with various construction projects. Teaching can include subjects such as English, math and science, sports, and extra-curricular activities. The nature of the construction projects varies greatly and is partly dependent on what prior volunteer groups have accomplished. This may involve doing work to maintain the school building and premises; other times, the volunteer group may be asked to begin or complete construction of a new classroom. This is very labor-intensive, as it may involve such tasks as hauling dirt and water, mixing cement, installing windows or roofing, or clearing rubble. If the project is very near completion, then the interior of the classroom will be the focus. Every volunteer can take part, regardless of his or her physical strength or abilities. There are tasks to accommodate everyone, and no one will be asked to do anything that may exceed their physical capacity.
Time will also be spent volunteering at a local orphanage. Volunteers will have a chance to interact with and care for young children and infants, and assist them with their daily needs. Tasks may include helping the children wash and dress, assisting with meal time, or organizing fun activities. Even if a volunteer is not interested in this kind of work, the children can still benefit from a positive person to simply interact with them and give them the attention they deserve.
The group trip can also be a valuable learning experience. Not only will volunteers learn a lot from hands-on experience in the village, but they will also be taught some basic Swahili, and be able to attend seminars and hear from guest speakers about social issues in the community – for example, the HIV/AIDS epidemic and its impact.
Although volunteers will be putting in their best effort and doing a lot of hard work, they will also get a chance to relax, have fun, and absorb the rich culture and natural beauty all around them. The group will have a chance to visit some Maasai villages, where they will learn about indigenous people’s lives and customs, and even experience a traditional nighttime dance. Volunteers will also be taken on an safari where they will get to trek around Mt. Meru and the famous Mt. Kilimanjaro, as well as explore the savannah. There will be plenty of wildlife to see, and plenty of breathtaking scenery to take in. Mountains, waterfalls, and coffee and banana plantations are just some of the sights to see in the splendid countryside of Tanzania.
Group volunteer trips are a great way to strengthen bonds, learn new things, improve communities and lives, and have fun. It is a unique excursion that can be experienced by everyone in your family, or student group, or office. Volunteering abroad on its own is a wonderful experience, but it can be even more fun and rewarding when you participate with friends, colleagues, or family members.
