About Projects Abroad: It was founded in 1992 when Dr. Peter Slowe, a university professor, realized the need for international programs that involve travelling and working abroad at the same time. A couple of his students approached him with an idea of spending a gap year in Eastern Europe. Knowing some colleagues in Romania, Dr. Peter Slowe set up a teaching English program for his students which gave a jump start to Projects Abroad.
Student by student Projects Abroad began sending participants on Teach English Abroad programs in Eastern Europe. Realizing the need for international volunteers in developing countries, Projects Abroad began growing and expanding its programs to many other countries all over the world.
Whether you are 16 or 75, a high school student or a retired professional, volunteering overseas is something that will change your life forever. No matter what your background or age is, Projects Abroad will find the right volunteer abroad program for you!
Highlights: The people of Ethiopia have many needs, and therefore there are many different community programs set up for international volunteers to participate in. Here are a few you can select from:
Care: Although teeming with natural beauty, Ethiopia was not too long ago wracked with war and famine. This resulted in a massive number of deaths, and created a huge number of orphans. There is also the issue of HIV/AIDS being widespread and largely unaddressed. Too many children are sick or left on the streets, and live in abject poverty. You can choose to volunteer abroad in an orphanage or day care center, where you will help take care of children and give them valuable attention. You can also choose to work with street children, and to help improve their lives by incorporating fun things like games, so that they don’t need to feel so abandoned. Boosting self-esteem can be very beneficial to these children.
Sports: In this project you can become a sports coach for primary and secondary school students. Not only will you help students develop athletic skills and have fun, you will also encourage positive growth and team-building. The school sports program focuses mainly on the areas of track and field, volleyball, soccer, or aerobics. You can pick whichever one you’re most interested in, and don’t need any prior coaching experience.
Teaching Abroad : This program focuses on teaching English to children of all ages. English is seen as a crucial language because it is the cornerstone of business and international relations. If more Ethiopian students can acquire a good grasp of English, they will be better equipped to take on the world. You don’t need any experience to teach English, just the desire to help improve lives and communities.
