Program Name: Community Volunteer Work - Care, Sports, and Teaching
Organization: Projects Abroad
About Projects Abroad: Projects Abroad was founded in 1992 when Dr. Peter Slowe, a university professor, realized the need for international programs that involve travelling and working abroad at the same time. A couple of his students approached him with an idea of spending a gap year in Eastern Europe. Knowing some colleagues in Romania, Dr. Peter Slowe set up a teaching English program for his students which gave a jump start to Projects Abroad.
Student by student Projects Abroad began sending participants on Teach English Abroad programs in Eastern Europe. Realizing the need for international volunteers in developing countries, Projects Abroad began growing and expanding its programs to many other countries all over the world. In addition to volunteer programs, Project Abroad now offers international internships as well.
Whether you are 16 or 75, a high school student or a retired professional, volunteering overseas is something that will change your life forever. No matter what your background or age is, Projects Abroad will find the right volunteer or internship abroad program for you!
Highlights: When you volunteer abroad in Bolivia, you will be able to choose from the following types of projects:
- Care: Depending on your interests and abilities, you can choose to help take care of orphans or children with mental and/or physical disabilities. Children of all ages could benefit from your care and attention. Projects could involve teaching life skills, taking children out on fun excursions, or even helping out with maintenance of an orphanage facility. You will be helping children to develop important skills as well as self-esteem.
- Sports: Children in Bolivia love sports, and with this project you will have the opportunity to coach volleyball. Along with other volunteers, you will be promoting an active lifestyle and keeping children of all ages involved in a healthy activity. The two main sports involved in this project are soccer and volleyball. The soccer club boasts 300 participants, and strives to give underprivileged children something healthy to look forward to. The volleyball project has been around for over forty years and provides a healthy environment for those who are not necessarily interested in soccer.
- Teaching: There are many opportunities to teach English, French, and even other languages in Bolivia, even if you have no teaching experience. You can choose between teaching at a local school or instructing at the University of San Simon. If you teach at a primary or secondary school, you will be enriching the education of low-income children. At the university level, you will also teach extra-curricular courses covering a variety of international topics, helping to prepare students for the real world.
