Kenya-Current Issues
The most major issues Kenya is concerned with are environmental changes, hunger, refugees, habitat destruction, and illicit drugs.
Environmental concerns in Kenya include water pollution industry, urban areas, and increased use of pesticides and fertilizers. There is also a problem with a water hyacinth infestation in Lake Victoria. Increased and prolonged droughts are causing soil erosion and desertification. Habitat loss due to deforestation and urbanization puts stress on animal population.
As a result of fighting in the Horn of Africa region, Kenya has taken in nearly 175,000 refugees from Somalia; 75,000 from Sudan; and 16,000 from Ethiopia.
Issues with illicit drugs include harvesting marijuana, transport of South Asian heroin through Kenya for buyers in Europe and North America, among others.
