Ghana-Current Issues
Many issues currently affecting Ghana are environmental issues, such as drought in north deforestation; overgrazing; soil erosion. Each of these issues has a negative impact on agriculture, and causes the entire country to suffer. Though Ghana has tried to pass laws in order to protect biodiversity, as long as the droughts continue, the soil will continue to degrade.
The removal of tropical rainforests for timber has threatened wildlife populations as well. When habitat is destroyed, so is the wildlife. Native species are also threatened by poaching.
In some places there are inadequate supplies of potable water, due to water pollution. This is not a problem in heavily populated areas to the south, as tap water is treated and is therefore safe to drink.
Ghana is currently home to about 35,000 Liberian refugees, and 8,000 refugees from Togo. Every day more Ghanaians return home from working the cocoa plantations in Cote d’Ivorie, where there is fighting. Though Ghana is proud to see its people return home, population growth has become a problem.
