San Jose
Located in the heart of the country, San Jose is a great place to visit when volunteering abroad in Costa Rica. The population of the city is about 1 million people, meaning it is home to almost half the population of the country. San Jose’s spring climate is very attractive to tourists from around the world. The architecture of the city is a mixture of different styles, dominated primarily by the buildings constructed in neoclassical and colonial style. From anywhere in town you can see the blue-green mountains covered with coffee plantations, creating picturesque views for San Jose’s habitants.
National Park Manuel Antonio
Manuel Antonio National Park is one of the most visited parks in Costa Rica. When volunteering abroad in this country, make sure you visit the park where you can see monkeys, jumpers, birds, lizards, red and dark blue crabs, spiders, iguanas and many other rare animals that you might not see otherwise. There is a specially hacked trail to go to the beach for a walk, or else beautiful places for an afternoon picnic. The beaches themselves are covered with beautiful white sand, and you can see turtle traps while walking along the coastline. National Park Manuel Antonio is a perfect place to get away and enjoy nature at its best.
Arenal
Arenal is a menacing volcano that has not operated for over 300 years, however in 1968 a major earthquake hit and an eruption followed. At present, it is best seen at night when lava flows along with the emissions of rocks on the northern slope. The top is usually covered with clouds, but looking at the slopes, you can clearly see the smoke haze. One of the most popular adventure sports in Costa Rica is kayaking. During this activity you can really see the striking beauty of the country. World champions in surfing states Lake Arenal to be the fifth best place in the world for this kind of sport. For surfers, Costa Rica is regarded as one of the premiere destinations in the world.
